Mom’s Ginger Tea (The Placebo effect?)

I grew up with the belief of a simple magic; my mom’ ginger tea has the secret power to cure everything. As a young child, I was offered a cup of warm ginger tea whenever I did not feel well. It did not matter that it was cold, fever, upset stomach, headaches, or simply feeling down. The tea had the magic to cheer me up.

I started to question its magic power when it did not work very effectively on some of my friends. I did my research later on, and found that ginger is widely used in herbal medicine. It has been used to help digestion, reduce nausea and help fight the flu and common cold, to name a few. However, it may cause gas, heartburn, upset stomach, and risk of bleeding.

So, it does NOT heal everything. Indeed, it may cause problems when it is misused. How could it work every time when I was a young child? Placebo effect did play a role in this case. I believe that it was the combination of herbal healing effect, the belief and trust, and the good feeling of receiving care and love.

A cup of warm ginger tea sounds good in the cold days, it still does!

  2. I understand where you are coming from! This is super sweet to know about! Honestly, there are a few things to consider with your situation in comparison to other people's experiences. People prepare herbs differently and also consume it in a different fashion. I'm sure what your mother has been doing has worked. She might have tried it many times herself and made mistakes along the way, and then found the right dosage and temperature of water and or amount of ginger, etc. Also to consider is that maybe she has many life experiences such as going through these sickness and symptoms herself and to have raised you guys to know your diet and lifestyle well enough to know how and when to give the ginger tea. Expert information don't talk about dosage and preparation much and there is a gap on actual experience in knowing the actual situation, so transference of information on how to use ginger may not be applicable thus it will not be effective, unlike the way your mom is very in tuned and in touch with her kids in just really giving all her motherly love and passion to really know what the matter is.
