Deep Ecology Platform
The following quotes are from the article “The eight-point Deep Ecology Platform at present provides the unifying principles of the deep ecology movement.” introduced in class.
- “Humans have no right to reduce this richness and diversity except to satisfy vital needs.”
- “Richness and diversity of life forms contribute to the realization of these values and are also values in themselves.”
- “The flourishing of human life and cultures is compatible with a substantial decrease of the human population. The flourishing of nonhuman life requires such a decrease.”
Our planet earth is a living organism. The ancient Greeks gave her the powerful name Gaia and looked on her as a goddess. It acts as a single self-regulated system. The homeostasis regulated by the Earth is much like the internal maintenance of our own bodies. What is the role of human being on this planet?
Humans impact the environment in many negative ways such as overpopulation, pollution, burning fossil fuels, and deforestation which cause many climate change and nature disasters. I have heard people say “Coronavirus is Earth’s vaccine. We’re the virus”. As many of us stay at home, we noticed that air pollution is slowing down, water pollution is clearing up , and natural wildlife is returning home.
It is an awakening call, the opportunity to raise our consciousness. We love this beautiful planet. It is our responsibility to protect, not to destroy her.
Beautiful. Imagery and words! Absolutely agree. It is an awakening, for some more than others, and time to reflect on our actions. The planet loves us back and is soo forgiving. We cannot continue to take advantage.

DeleteI love this on so many levels! Where is this picture from? I want nothing more than to plunge into that lake right now. Your reflections are so spot on and so beautifully written. I wholeheartedly agree with them all. I am struck by "Coronavirus is Earth's vaccine. We're the virus." This is the way I've viewed the virus since the beginning but that analogy (or reality) is the perfect way to describe it. We have taken advantage of our giving host, Gaia.
ReplyDeleteThank you. The picture I took was from Lake Tahoe
